I'd still be tempted to use yaz-client from your server to see if
there a connection problem (firewall, etc.) between your server and
their Z39.50 server.

I'd grep all of them like so:

grep \\[ERR /openils/var/log/*

Anything that matches is bad and noteworthy.

Generally osrfsys.log is a good one to be following.
