[OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Evergreen Web Site Strategy

I probably should have used the word "resource". I will give you a few examples of what I mean:

1) Official DIG documentation (http://docs.evergreen-ils.org/)
- if these directories will be physically moved to the new home but will maintain the structure and style, then this is not a big deal and could easily be done. If you are thinking of a deeper embedding and getting the content into the new navigation system of the general website or changing the style to something more sophisticated and under the control of the Web implementation team, that might be more interesting. This relates to the use of DocBook for generating these pages and whoever takes style control over them, will need to know a little about DocBook.

2) Mailing list archives (e.g. http://libmail.georgialibraries.org/pipermail/open-ils-general/)
- I have found a large number of solutions by searching or browsing the various list archives.

3) IRC logs (http://www.open-ils.org/irc_logs/evergreen/)
Format is plain text, but the content of these logs are extremely rich with nuggets of information gold. Personally, I have only asked a few question on chat, but have found a number of solutions in the logs. In many cases, the might address an obscure issue or an issue with the software stack outside of Evergreen (apache, PostgreSQL, dojo...) which might not be covered in the formal documentation.

4) Evergreen blog (http://evergreen-ils.org/blog/)
- I am thinking here in terms of the archives again and not so much up-to-date blog news updates. Blog posts date back to 2004 and this blog is probably the closest thing we have to the complete history of Evergreen.

In short, I am mostly worried about lost information which is currently located in archives and logs which might not be easily transferred to a new site promising to be the one stop solution to solve all of your Evergreen needs. A search feature on the site which will include searching these resources, would address most of my concerns and direct links to the various log and archives locations might also be nice.

Robert,

Excellent! You've hit on one of the very things we'd like feedback on.

-Perhaps this can be worded so it sounds more like you are providing links to existing tools and not creating a one stop site to replace the existing tools?

We were in fact thinking of it as the one-stop location for Evergreen specific information. And we envisioned it as a clearinghouse for related resources (uploaded/posted by community members) as well as provide links to related resources (also contributed by the community).

What existing tools did you have in mind? I want to make sure we have them on our radar!

Lori
