Given this use case, marking items as part of some group without a
physical relationship in space, I would amend my suggestion to instead
use an copy stat cat.  If you leave the 852 tags in your records (at
least at first, excising them later is simple) then you can
post-process the data to populate the stat cat.  Then use the shelving
location as intended, to point to the area of the building in which
the items reside.
