This may have already been mentioned, but some folks at Miami University are
doing neat things with QR Codes and phone scanners.

It's RFID-esque in execution, but there's no reason the QR code couldn't
also be used for patron-initiated functions (ooh, like bringing up reviews).
Cheers,
Kate

If users could grab a book and use their library app on their smart phone to
check themselves out...that would be cool.
Or what about adding items to your library account wish list or book bag?
If could read the bar code and end up with an ISBN number, that opens up
lots of possibilities for finding online resources that could be helpful
(buy the book, find the book in another library, get an ebook version).

All of this that raises the more general question: what would the use
cases be for using the camera on your phone to scan the barcode of an item
you have in hand? Perhaps as a way of adding reference-only items to your
"items used" history list so you can find it more readily next time, or jump
from the citation to an online resource or alternate
location at some point in the future?
