Hi all,
MassLNC is planning to work with Equinox on a development project to
improve support for cross references in the Evergreen browse search. The
project will include the following components:
* The use of the Metadata Authority Description Scheme (MADS) to extract
and normalize authority headings. This work will allow improved matching
between browse headings extracted from MARC fields in the bib record and
those that are extracted from authority records. Currently, the way bib
headings are extracted forces some normalization upon the content.
However, the same normalization doesn't occur with authority headings.
This leads to duplicate entries in the browse list and also results in
headings that contain a cross reference pointing to itself. The MADS
work should reduce the number of instances of duplicate entries.
* Teach the Evergreen backend about different types of headings in an
authority record, i.e. broader terms, narrower terms and related terms.
Note: this will not introduce broader, narrower, and related terms in
the interface (though it will support future work to do so), but will
provide more information at the UI level when building links.
When the above work is done, we will continue working with Equinox to
determine further development that is required to improve the way cross
references display in the interface.
At this time, we are seeking development partners that are also
interested in improving cross references and can help us fund this
project. If you are interested in learning more about the project,
please send me an email directly.
Thank you!
Kathy
