[OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] [External] Re: Publication Year in Reports

Rogan,

To answer your question, I was using the built-in Evergreen reports, and was pulling the “Publication Year (normalized)” from the Bib Record--Simple Record Extracts. I’m guessing that the normalization routine is doing something unusual when the date isn’t the standard four-digit year.

Hi Irene,

Are you using the reporter table for this? I have seen this before there and not had the tuits to look into it in any depth since I've only seen it on rare occasions but checking a few data sets it's not hard to find examples under a number of scenarios and it's not hard to imagine a regular expression creating this result. It's probably worth a launchpad bag and some discussion on how to handle it. Maybe we should be checking for a four digit number and using it when found.

Ultimately that table might get replaced with newer functionality of course as the pub date field itself isn't RDA friendly but that's another discussion.

Has anyone ever noticed that there is some strangeness with the Publication Year in Evergreen reports? The Publication Year is normalized in the output, and there seems to be an issue with how the data gets normalized. Some examples of what I am seeing:

264 $c September 1, 2015 Publication Year in report: 1

264 $c October 6, 2017 Publication Year in report: 6

264 $c October 31, 2016 Publication Year in report: 31

When the date in the 264 is not simply the year, the normalization routine seems to be pulling out only a piece of the date, not the full date.

I tried looking for any previous reports of this issue in Launchpad but didn’t find one. Apologies if it is there and I missed it.
