[OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Holds / Circulation question

Just to over-specify a little bit, here’s some db field names and what they’re called in the client and why that can be confusing:
asset.call_number.owning_lib - Owning Library. The branch that purchased the item (usually). This one is set at cataloging time and doesn’t change unless done manually.
asset.copy.circ_lib - Circulating Library. The library where the item is normally kept. This is frequently the same as the call number owning library, but if you have Floating enabled it may change to the checkin library when it’s circulated.
action.circulation.circ_lib - Checkout / Renewal Library. Used to also be called Circulating Library! Reusing that name has caused some confusion with reporting in the past. This is the library that checked out the item to a user, regardless of the value of the item’s circ_lib field. This is the one you want to filter on for circ reports to determine what items passed over your desk(s) regardless of where they may have came from.
So, to get back to Stuart’s original question, the Checkout / Renewal Library from the Circulation source is probably what you want if you want to count circs at your location(s) regardless of where the item came from. More filtering can be done on the item Circulating Library field for things like how many of your own items circ to your users vs items from elsewhere, and how many of your items circ elsewhere in a consortium, etc.

The owning library as others have noted is a volume / call number attribute and has the same restriciton to not allow null values.

Does the circulating library temporarily change to ‘LibraryB’ so that library gets the circulation? I’m thinking of circ reports now. Or would it be better to use Checkout Library instead to capture all circulations at ‘LibraryB’
