loan duration and renewals question

Hey all, Newbie question I'm hoping someone can help me with. I'm trying to figure out how the "Circulation Duration Rule" is linked to the bib record? I'd like to apply the "7_days_0_renew" to a record, but all I see in the "Holdings Editor" is the "Loan Duration" and the only options for that are short/normal/long. I'm not sure where short/normal/long are even defined. What am I missing?? Thanks, Tessa -------------------------------- Tessa Johnson (she/her) Collection Development & Systems Manager Howe Library www.thehowe.org<http://www.thehowe.org/> Currently Reading<https://www.goodreads.com/user/email_signature_destination/9480503?utm_medium=reading_link&utm_source=email_signature> [Book Cover]<https://www.goodreads.com/user/email_signature_destination/9480503?utm_medium=cover&utm_source=email_signature> [Goodreads Logo] <https://www.goodreads.com/?utm_medium=gr_logo&utm_source=email_signature> Written correspondence to or from the Town of Hanover, its officials, and employees regarding town business is a governmental document, and is generally subject to public disclosure under NH RSA 91-A, the Right to Know Law. Hello Tessa, The missing piece is your circulation policies (Administration -> Local Administration -> Circulation Policies). Your circulation policies should tell you under what circumstances Evergreen applies the "7_days_0_renew" duration. If you don't have circulation policies already using that duration rule you would need to have them added. Circulation policies are often based on circulation modifiers and patron permission group but can have other factors play a part as well. You can find information on circulation policies in the Evergreen documentation here: https://docs.evergreen-ils.org/docs/latest/admin_initial_setup/borrowing_ite... We also have local documentation that may be helpful: https://docs.libraries.coop/sitka/_circulation_policies.html In our consortium only Co-op Support staff create and edit circulation policies but library staff can view their policies. That should cover it, but I want to mention that most often circulation policies are keyed on the item, rather than the bib record. (Per the part of the documentation describing "best practices".) The circulation modifier is an attribute of the item record. So is shelf location, and "item circ library" (the library the item more or less belongs to... note that the term "circ library" also means "the library performing the transaction" in some contexts, so be wary of that). So a single bib record can be linked to multiple call number records (perhaps in different locations, branches, libraries, etc) and those can be linked to multiple items... each of which has that full set of attributes that the circulation policies are actually looking for. It is possible for many different circulation policies to apply to different items, all under the same bib record. There are plenty of other things that circ rules can be matched on (including a few that can look at some values within the bib record), but item attributes such as circulation modifier and item circ library, followed by occasional use of shelf location are the main things having to do with the materials themselves that we lean on the most heavily. (The rest of the equation for us are the values having to do with the patron checking the item out.) -Jeremy -------------------------------------- Jeremiah Miller | 541-619-8285 (cell) Sysadmin | Albany Public Library -------------------------------------- ________________________________________ From: Jennifer Pringle via Evergreen-catalogers <evergreen-catalogers@list.evergreen-ils.org> Sent: Tuesday, April 1, 2025 8:53 AM To: Evergreen Community Catalogers Cc: Tessa Johnson; Jennifer Pringle Subject: [Evergreen-catalogers] Re: loan duration and renewals question [WARNING! Thank you both!! Jennifer, I saw the circulation policies list, but ours seem to be pretty sparse so it just looks like 179 vague records. Reading your local documentation was very helpful. Thanks! Jeremy, thanks for clarifying. I was thinking of item records, but did say bib records. It's good to keep them straight!
