[Evergreen-catalogers] Volume Information: Classification Scheme

We do count the Fiction, biography and other "letter" call numbers as
Dewey and have told libraries to set everything to Dewey. You could
consider those Generic but there would need to be an easy way to
retrospectively set the label on those call number records and to set
Dewey to Dewey. Else, the sorting would differ. Given the number of
libraries in PINES with different shelving locations and different call
numbers (F, FIC, FICTION, JF, J F , J FIC, etc., etc.), I think that any
automated way of flipping labels to have multiple schemes would be either
impossible or require really complex programming.

We are getting Dewey numbers supplied. In the batch area, it is in a drop
down menu; but in the individual volume area, it is in the data well.

We don't use the functionality of prefixes or suffixes, but Dewey numbers
do have Prefixes (and occasionally suffixes) (R 808.8 GEN, for example).
In PINES, call numbers are locally assigned and "belong" to the library.
While I wouldn't object if a library wanted to use the functionality, we
haven't fully tested it in PINES. It would also mean the library would
have to retrospectively change all their call numbers with prefixes so
that they would all sort the same way. It might be possible to automate
that process for a single library, but it would again be a complicated
process for PINES as a whole given the varied nature of prefixes across
libraries.

We also have not implemented monographic parts for much the same reason --
the complexity of retrospectively doing so in a consortium the size and
nature of PINES. I want to implement this for the volume level hold
capability our patrons want; but, getting existing records done is the
hang up.

Thanks for the info! Comments, questions below.

I was thinking we might get results like that.

I'll be interested to hear how it goes.

It sounds like you are currently setting everything to Dewey, even if the
call number is a different scheme (like Fic, local media schemes, etc.)?
Is that right?

So you are getting Dewey numbers supplied? That would be nice.
That might be a benefit to switching.

Are you using prefixes and suffixes at all?
