[Evergreen-catalogers] Integrating Browse in Searches

Hi Sylvia,

Our consortium experiences the same problem with lack of cross-references
and the most complained about author is, you guessed it, J.A. Jance. If
patrons or staff used the browse list they would see the large number of
entries for Judith A. Jance but unfortunately they don't seem to use that.
I developed a workaround.

Headings in our bib records are linked to the authority records so any
change to an authority record also updates the heading although there are
some that need to be done manually. My workaround is to edit the authority
record to add the alternate form of a name as a qualifier. Yes, I know I am
"unauthorizing" authorized headings but it has cut down on complaints. I
keep a list of the edited authorities so we can change back when we finally
get the browse list cross-references. In our records Judith A. Jance's main
entry looks like *Jance, Judith A.$q(J.A.). *

Other problematic authors are those whose name is different due to change
in marital status and Asian, Russian or Israeli names. We usually find out
about these when a library reports that the name on the title page doesn't
match the 100 field and ask for a correction. That was the case for *Sin,
Kyong-suk* who became *Sin, Kyong-suk$q(Kyung-sook Shin)*.

If anyone has a better solution, please let me know.

Janet
