[Evergreen-catalogers] MARC Batch Edit questions

Hi Jane,

Thanks for working on the documentation!  I did a fair amount of testing with the MARC batch edit earlier this year so I could have a better understanding of how it works.

I have been working my way through records making some changes on $9 in tag 856 (90% complete!) using the MARC batch edit replace. What I am doing is fairly simple and might not be exactly what you are looking for, but I am using the Advanced Matching Restriction to specify that when the $u matches http://statelibrarync.org/digitization/request/ then the existing $9 should be completely replaced with the new $9

This is our first large scale use of the MARC batch edit, but I have not been successful using the advanced matching restriction matching on the same thing that is going to be replaced.  For example, in changing the $9, I am not able to use the $9 as the match.

Adding fields/subfields:

If you specify a subfield in the Rule Setup, it will add the subfield to the existing tag.

If you don’t specify a subfield it will create a new tag, even if the same tag exists

Hi Jane,

I have not used MARC Batch Edit much.  When I first tried to work with it I found it confusing, so I have relied upon MARCEdit for editing bib records.  However, your e-mail prompted me to go back and look at it again.

As far as I can tell, you DO have to include a value in the MARC tag when adding a new MARC field to bib records.   So, for example, to add a new MARC 650 field, I find that the following does NOT work.  Note that the instruction in the 905 field is empty.

The following DOES add a new MARC field to my bib records.

If you include a value for Subfields I have found that a new MARC field is NOT added.  Rather, a new subdivision is added to any existing fields with that same MARC tag.  This seems to be the case regardless of what subfield is used.

So, the following will add the subdivision "United States" to all of the existing 650 fields.

I must be missing something obvious here because, for the life of me, I cannot figure out how to add a NEW MARC field if a field with the same tag already exists in the record.

I have not used the Replace function at all, so I cannot comment on that right now.
