MySQL support is not planned for any release of the software -- we
made a decision early on not to target MySQL for technical reasons.
An Oracle port is planned, but not for the very near future, unless
someone decides to point resources at that.

As for hosting, there are many services that offer postgres as an
option. And I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that there is currently
at least one vendor providing hosted EG services: Equinox Software,

FULL DISCLOSURE: I'm one of the founders of Equinox.

There is no direct integration today, though an export of the users
from the LDAP server could be loaded into the ILS. Others have
mentioned a desire to authenticate against external sources, so this
may happen in a more integrated manner in the future.
