Hi Dave,
You may want to try this on the server:
sudo tail -f /var/log/apache2/access.log
Assuming there's no traffic on the server from elsewhere, you can leave that going and then attempt to access the server with your staff client -- you should see the incoming connections in the log and a 404 coded request that is probably coming from your staff client. It may help you solve the problem. You probably can just add a symlink for whatever it's trying to access.
