Hi
One of the hazards of subscribing to a list-serv is that, if you turn your back for a few days, you may find an inbox overstuffed with new messages. In this case, not messages you want to summarily delete either. Thanks to Brad for nudging those of us who were just reading and thanks to everybody who's written in so far to introduce themselves -- it's quite an interesting group.

In my varied (not to say checkered) career, I've worked in almost every kind of library (medical is still the missing one) and in several IT shops on the east coast and now in Oregon. The library jobs (primarily in tech services) bled over into IT with such frequency that systems became the major job descriptor rather than the minor one. My ILS background comes from 5 years as the ILS Manager at a large public library running Dynix Classic and as the Project Manager for migrating that system to Innovative Interfaces Millennium. Many, many stories associated with that project but it was definitely never dull. That job also included a few other IT pieces such as managing web servers and assorted applications other than the ILS. So I have associates in both the Dynix and Innovative worlds and will be interested in seeing how many of those libraries take the open source route. In the library I migrated, we definitely needed the acquisitions functionality, so it's interestin
g to see that being developed in Evergreen.

I'm interested in open source projects in general, but am not religious about it. I'm also interested in the future of ILS products in general and whether libraries decide that maybe all the pieces of an ILS shouldn't be integrated. I've stepped out of hands-on ILS involvement for the moment, but will be interested in hearing what all of you are doing. One of my current projects is working with small organizations (not necessarily libraries) that are trying to set up better communications and web management (much like the web 2.0 and library 2.0 scenarios).

Just as a side note (because other systems people give me grief about it) -- I use an aol address for most of my list-serv subscriptions partly from habit (years of spending time at a place where I wanted to stay connected and the only available connection was through an aol account) and partly because aol will definitely ditch messages that hang around too long. An IT co-worker once informed me that no serious systems person could possibly use aol. I admit to agreeing with him in regard to the regular services but the email address works for me.
