[OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Call number searching?

Yes, the call number search under quick browse is a shelf browser. Keyword
searches look within the bibliographic record and not the call
number/volume record where your call number most likely resides. So, the
call numbers that are keyword indexed for that search are those in the
050, 082, etc. fields, typically Dewey and LCC numbers. You can, of
course, add your call number, including your text-based call numbers, in
an appropriate field in the bib record, making it keyword searchable.
Using search filters is always problematic - not just because of
cataloging errors. You might have an audiobook accompanying the print
book where the record is correctly coded as a book. They are, however,
useful.
If you still add your prefixes to call numbers, you can run reports for
inventory that can be sorted by call number order. You can also run
reports based on shelving locations, if you have assigned materials to
different locations.
Current versions of Evergreen has functionality that allows you to put
prefixes into a separate part of the call number. Since we don't do that,
I have not tested to see how the call numbers with separate pre-fixes sort
in a call number browse. They should sort with their Dewey number -
001.234 Ref001.234 001.345, rather than 001.234 001.345 Ref001.345 for
example. I think there is a script that will automate the process of
retrospectively adding the prefix to records. Mike R. probably has info
about that.

Subject: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] ***SPAM*** Call number searching?
One call number searching is in the quick search, but brings up a shelf
browser - as far as I can figure out.
We have a need in K-12 libraries for call number searching combined with
key word searching.
Patron wants poster about civil rights or "what videos do you have on
war?" or "I need a list of audio books appropriate for 7th graders."
While the search filters help for some of this (if the item has been
completely and correctly cataloged with item type), it still would be
handy to have call number added to the search input choices.
Call number searching in the advanced classed only allows text-free call
numbers, eliminating all our call numbers for non-book items (posters, AV,
DVDs, etc)
Originally we added words as the first line of the call numbers because
these items are located in their own sections and we do inventory a
section at a time, limiting the inventory list to the call numbers for
that section.
